It's Kyran Dockery's birthday. Happy Birthday Kyran!
It was an even earlier start this morning for our first game in the Tournament. Down for breakfast for 7.10am to be on the bus for 7.30 all for a 9.00 kick-off.
It was not as hot as yesterday and a little cloudy which will help. The big pity is that we can only tog out 18 players for any one game so 5 of the lads cannot be involved on the pitch today.
We arrived at the grounds in good time. The grounds look even better in daylight than they did on Thursday night. We were shown to a simply huge dressing room and the penny is starting to drop. This is big.
A good preparation and a good warm-up and we were all good to go.
This was every bit as good as the score line suggests.
From the first whistle we set a quick tempo and passed the ball very well. It was a very positive and bright start and rewarded with an early goal in the third minute when David Fleming floated in a delicious cross from the left which Ronan Hynes headed powerfully to the net for 1-0.
Three minutes later it was 2-0. Kevin Daly picked out David Fleming with a great pass. Davy again put in a great ball this time for Michael McGloin to score.
Ronan Hynes then blasted an effort off the crossbar after seven minutes just before we made it 3-0. It came off another David Fleming cross, for Ronan Hynes to head off the post but the ball came back to Ronan to power home to the back of the net for 3-0.
It was all ADSL. We were really playing well. Ciaran Lennon then hit the post before we made it 4-0. Dylan Molloy launched a screamer from distance that came back off the underside of the crossbar where the ball fell to Michael McGloin who bundled the ball over the line with a little help from a defender.
Michael had another super effort just on the call of half-time when his low shot was brilliantly saved at the butt of the post.
But 4-0 at half-time was very good and well deserved.
We made four changes at half-time and three more during the course of the second half but there was no drop in standard or performance.
Ciaran Lennon made it 5-0 early in the second half following great work by Sean McGrane. Damien Duff then scored a sensational goal, coming up from right back, cutting inside and then firing in a screamer that just flew into the net for 6-0.
Ronan Hynes then wrapped up a magnificent hat-trick to make it 7-0. Again, we had great joy down the left wing. Sean McGrane was excellent, dropping the shoulder to make room and then pulled the ball back for Ronan to score a very good goal.
Ronan might have scored his fourth when again Sean McGrane did great work down the left crossing for Ronan but this time his finish thundered back off the underside of the crossbar.
However in the closing minutes we did score again. Denji Adeleye did most of it himself cutting in from the right to score with a low hard shot.
So 8-0 it finished and a most pleasing start to the Tournament.
NEWSFLASH: Kate Nolan has purged her contempt and restored her good name and reputation. She fronted up and sang "Happy Birthday" for Kyran on the bus on the way home. Well done Kate!
After we got back to the Hotel we returned our playing gear and then we had free time which most choose to spend in the pool. Michael had to do some deep sea diving to find Emmet's key!
Then it was lunch time. The food was magnificent and could not be any better than last night. A few words were had this morning and we are now upgraded and dined like royalty. Mussels for starters! Need we say any more? But we must. The desert ... the desert ... how can you fit that many calories on a plate smothered in cream! Heaven! We don't even miss the hula hula skirts!
In the afternoon we went into town to St. Julian to do some shopping and then we are off to a match. But this time we are watching and not playing. In the V.I.P. section, if you don't mind!
We were guests at the Maltese Premier Division game between Valletta and Paola Hibernians. They are first and second in the League with Valetta enjoying a three point advantage. We were seated in the VIP Section which was also a buffer zone between the two sets of supporters. The atmosphere was great. Hibs scored first to lead 1-0 and were the better side. Valletta equalised before half-time and from there looked the more likely to win. Valletta went 2-1 up with a dodgy penalty and then 3-1 up. The two sets of supporters were having a real go at each other and it was great fun to be in the middle. In the closing moments Hibs got a goal back and the Valletta keeper was then sent off. Great fun altogether. We play Paola Hibernians in the Tournament on Monday morning.
After the game it was back to the hotel for dinner. It was fantastic. We also had birthday cake for both Kyran and Irwyn.
We then had some free time before time to go to our rooms for 10.00pm. It will be another busy day tomorrow. Everyone is enjoying every second of it. Colin and Brian had a rough evening. They went out to watch a bit of the golf but the barman threw out his only two customers because he was tired!
The two lads had a strange evening. The fella in Reception thinks they are Russian coaches!!??
More to come tomorrow.
